March 4-March 25, 2014
Tuesdays, 4 PM PST/7 PM EST (3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25)

The 4-week course following this free webinar will explore how to think about your memoir like a house you’re building from the ground up. Linda Joy and Brooke will be using the metaphor of building a house to address the following important concepts:

Class 1. Time, place, and intention (your foundation)

Everything you have experienced has taken place at a certain time, and in a particular place. Some memoirists “float” their memoir suspended from the earth until they learn the important techniques of grounding their experiences in time and place, and doing it with intention. Your intention is the passion and the message that you want to deliver to your readers. Getting clear on these three things helps you create a solid foundation.

Class 2. Outline, themes, and story-arc (your blueprint)

It’s easier to write a memoir with a road map. We will be discussing ways to frame and plan your story. Even if you are a right-brained, seat-of-the-pants writer, this information will help you stay focused on what’s important in your memoir.

Class 3. Scene, plot, and narration/voice (framing and drywall)

Every story—and a memoir is a story—is built with scenes that create a plot using narration to shape and tell the story. Without the tools of scene, plot, and narration, you do not have enough framing to create a solid memoir.

Class 4. Sensual details, takeaways, and making the story wholly yours by bringing it alive (decorating)

Your brain reacts instantly to sensual details. As a writer, you need to know how to create a world your reader can react to viscerally. This brings your story alive, and offers your reader a way to feel your story, to light up their brain with your experiences and lessons learned. To do this you must first understand what you want the “takeaway” to be for your reader. Every successful memoir must have takeaways.
